- In August 1975, the General Department of Transport decided to establish the Southern River Administration (the predecessor of the Southern River Corporation) on the basis of taking over the Water Transport Department of the Republic of Vietnam regime to perform the function of State management and administration. Manage a book of affiliated units. Since then, SOWATCO has developed through 3 main stages as follows:
- Period 1975 to August 1996:On August 9, 1975, in Decision No. 32-QD/TC, the General Department of Transport established the Southern River Road Department. After that, the Southern River Transportation Corporation developed through different names such as the River Transportation Department (August 6, 1976), the Mekong River Transportation Joint Enterprise (January 30, 1979), the Union of River Transportation Enterprises No. Thuy II (September 14, 1993).
- Period 1996 to June 2003:
- Implementing Decision 90/TTg dated March 7, 1994 of the Prime Minister on establishing a list of State enterprises with sufficient capital, capacity, assets and means, qualified to become strong companies, the Ministry of Transport has issued Decision No. 2124/QD-TCCB-LD dated August 13, 1996 on the establishment of the General Department of Transport. Southern River Road Company operates under the Corporation 90 model with a scale including the Corporation Agency, 5 independent accounting member companies and 5 dependent economic accounting units.
- Period from June 2003 to present:
- On May 26, 2003, in Decision No. 94/2003/QD-TTg, the Southern River Road Corporation was approved by the Prime Minister for a pilot project to convert the Corporation to be organized and operate according to the Parent Company - Subsidiary Company model, whereby at the time of establishment the Corporation included the Parent Company, 5 Subsidiaries (which are joint stock companies) and 3 Companies. joint venture with foreign countries.
- On June 26, 2003, the Ministry of Transport issued Decision No. 1863/QD-BGTVT to establish the parent company of Southern Waterway Corporation (SOWATCO). The Corporation includes the Parent Company, 5 Subsidiaries (joint stock companies), 3 Joint Venture Companies with foreign countries and 3 Associate Companies.
- On July 4, 2008, in Decision No. 854/QD-TTg, the Southern River Road Corporation was approved by the Prime Minister for its equitization plan
- On June 9, 2009, Southern River Road Corporation officially transformed into Southern River Road Joint Stock Corporation. Southern River Road Joint Stock Corporation includes 3 Subsidiaries (joint stock companies), 2 joint venture companies with foreign countries and 2 affiliated companies.
- In March 2016, the Corporation converted its shareholder structure from majority State ownership to an enterprise type with no State ownership capital.
- Building ships and floating structures.
- Repair and maintenance of means of transport (except cars, motorbikes, motorbikes and other motor vehicles).
- Other specialized wholesale not classified elsewhere (Buying and selling helmets).
- Inland waterway freight + Warehousing and storage of goods + Loading and unloading of goods
- Other support service activities related to transportation.
- Labor supply and management + Vocational education
- Wholesale of solid, liquid, gas fuels, and related products in detail: Agents selling gasoline, oil, lubricants, buying and selling engine coolant, buying and selling coal.
