Establishment History:
- On October 30, 1962, the Bank for Foreign Trade was established under Decision No. 115/CP issued by the Government Council on the basis of separation from the Foreign Exchange Management Department under the Central Bank (now the State Bank).
- On April 1, 1963, officially opened the operation of NHNT as an exclusive foreign bank.
- On November 14, 1990, NHNT officially transformed from a specialized bank, exclusive in foreign economic activities to a multi-functional State-owned commercial bank according to Decision No. 403-CT dated November 14, 1990 of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers.
- On September 21, 1996, the Governor of the State Bank issued Decision No. 286/QD-NH5 on the re-establishment of NHNT on the basis of Decision No. 68/QD-NH5 dated March 27, 1993 of the Governor of the State Bank. Accordingly, NHNT is allowed to operate according to the model of Corporations 90 and 91 specified in Decision No. 90/QD-TTg dated March 7, 1994 of the Prime Minister with the international transaction name: Bank for Foreign Trade of Viet Nam, abbreviated name is Vietcombank.
- By the end of 2006, NHNT had developed strongly following the multi-function banking model with 58 Branches, 1 Transaction Office, 87 Transaction Offices and 4 affiliated subsidiaries nationwide; 2 Representative offices and 1 subsidiary abroad, with a staff of nearly 6,500 people. - According to License No. 138/GP-NHNN issued by the Governor of the State Bank on May 23, Vietnam Bank for Foreign Trade (VietcomBank) officially switched to operating according to the mechanism and model of a joint stock commercial bank. with charter capital of 12,100,860,260,000 VND.

- Receive deposits;

- Entrust, accept entrustment, and act as an agent in fields related to commercial banking activities, including the management of assets and investment capital of organizations and individuals under contracts;
