- Transportation and Chartering Joint Stock Company, formerly known as the Foreign Trade Transport Corporation, was established on February 18, 1963 according to Decision No. 103/BNGT/TCCB of the Ministry of Foreign Trade (now the Ministry of Trade).
- In October 1984, the Company was transferred from the Ministry of Foreign Trade to the Ministry of Transport under the direct management of Decision No. 334/CT dated October 1, 1984 of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers (now the Prime Minister).
- On November 9, 1984, the Company was renamed "Ship Chartering and Maritime Brokering Corporation" under the Ministry of Transport according to Decision No. 145/HDBT of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers (now the Prime Minister).
- On October 11, 1991, the Company was renamed "Transportation and Chartering Corporation" under the Ministry of Transport according to Decision No. 2036/QD-TCCB-LD of the Ministry of Transport,.
- On June 1, 1993, the Company was re-established and renamed "Transportation and Chartering Company" (Vietfracht) according to Decision No. 1084/QD-TCCB-LD of the Minister of Transport.
- On November 25, 2003, the Parent Company: Shipping and Chartering Company was established under Decision No. 207/2003/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister and Decision No. 3554/QD-BGTVT of the Minister of Transport.
- In May 2003, the Company was honored to be awarded the title of Hero of Labor Unit in the reform period by the State.
- In 2006, implementing the Government's major policy of equitizing State-owned Enterprises, the Transport and Chartering Joint Stock Company officially transformed into a joint stock company according to Decision No. 963/QD-BGTVT dated April 27, 2006 of the Minister of Transport on converting State-owned Enterprises into Joint Stock Companies, with the name The full name is Ship Chartering and Transport Joint Stock Company, abbreviated as VIETFRACHT.
